Digital Camera Automatic Flash

The manual adjustment of the aperture depending on the distance may result uncomfortable and even complicated. If we are moving with the camera or have to photograph moving objects, we would have to select an adequate aperture before shooting. Is there a system that lets us forget about the need to adjust the aperture on every shot? There is the electronic flash of automatic exposure , which usually has two modes: manual, were it releases all the available energy, and automatic, were it regulates the light needed for a given aperture and for the scene being photographed.

In automatic mode, the photographer sets a diaphragm aperture and lets the flash, equipped with a reflected light measuring cell , dose the intensity of the flash according to it's measurement. In camera's with light measuring on the focal plane ( OTF, of the film measuring) can use the camera's photometer in combination with a “dedicated” flash to do the same function. The system takes in account the sensitivity of the film and the diaphragm's aperture being used; when pressing the trigger, the shutter opens and the flash begins; immediately, the flash cell start to measure light reflected by the scene, and cuts the flash when the intensity measured is sufficient. It is an instantaneous but completely effective. An

automatic flash doses the intensity according to the distance maintaining the aperture fixed. The old problem of “an aperture for every distance” has turned into “an aperture for all distances”, from less than a meter to the limit of possibilities of the machine. The further you are from the scene, the more intense the flash will be, up to a distance (limit of our radius of action at that aperture) were the flash releases all it strength. Further than that limit distance, objects will appear overexposed with the selected aperture. Since the intensity of the flash Is usually inferior to the maximum, the recharge cycle of the flash is much shorter, since only a fraction of the accumulated energy is released. With this system you gain comfort and mobility, you can notably reduce the recharge time, and the probability of being right with the exposure it very high.

Operation for a Digital Camera Flash

The majority of flash apparatus that are used nowadays are automatic. At first sight they appear as very complicated objects, with many guides and numbers. In reality, the automatic flash starts the following dialogue with the user:

  • What is the sensitivity of the film? The photographer selects the sensitivity in the device's index.)
  • For this sensitivity, you have the option of working with the following aperture; which do you choose? (The photographer chooses the functioning mode with the correct option.)
  • For the chosen aperture, I will take care that the exposure is correct inside an action radius that is compatible with my maximum strength (NG).
